INQUIRER: I will just ask if it is true that the day of Sabbath is Saturday? Can we read this in the Bible if it is Saturday or if it is not Saturday? Can we clarify this in the Bible?
Bro. Eli F. Soriano (EFS): It is not true, brother, that Sabbath is Saturday. There are many Sabbaths in the Bible. The proof is, there were many Sabbaths in Israel. Listen to Ezekiel 20:20 -
Bro. Daniel S. Razon (DSR): "And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God."
EFS: To observe the Sabbaths was commanded by God to Israel. There are many Sabbaths. There is a Sabbath of day, Sabbath of month, Sabbath of year - there are many. Not all of those are Saturday. The Sabbath of the week was the seventh day; it was really Saturday. But there is Sabbath of the years. For example, the yearly Sabbath celebrated in the feasts of Israel. That could be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.... As you know, a date has no exact day. There are dates that fall on a Tuesday, Like the Sabbath when our Lord Jesus Christ was killed. The preparation for that Sabbath was on a Wednesday. That was a great Sabbath but not on a Saturday. In John 19:31 -
DSR: "The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,)..."
EFS: See that? Saint John explains that Christ was killed on a high day of sabbath. It was not an ordinary sabbath day on Saturday. So, biblically speaking, like the sabbath, the passover, wherein they also have their sabbath, sabbaths fall on different days. But the seventh day is really for the Jews. Only that not all sabbaths are on a Saturday. There are Sabbaths of years... There is even seven times seven. So, 7x7 = 49. So the 50th year is called Jubilee. The day of Pentecost fell on that. That is also a sabbath for the Jews. So Israel had various sabbaths. That is my answer, brother.
