INQUIRER: Why are some children born with Down syndrome or disabilities while some are perfectly fit? Is God fair?
BRO. ELI SORIANO (EFS): Of course, He is always fair and that is biblical. God is fair, God is practising justice or righteousness. You see, the word “righteousness” in the Scriptures if you are going to look it up in the Greek Scriptures, “righteousness” in Greek is “dikaiosune” which means equity or fairness. Righteousness means “dikaiosune”, which means equity and justice. So, God is fair. Now the question is, why are there children born perfectly fit, perfectly healthy, and why are there children who are born with defects in their being? Let us see, in the book of Exodus 4:11 –
BRO. DANIEL RAZON (DSR): “And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?”
EFS: He said to Moses – “Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?” You see? Every human being that exists on earth were born with God’s permission. He is the creator of all men according to the Bible. Even the blind, the dumb, the seeing are creations of God. Now, the question is, is He fair? It seems for others that God is unfair, that He’s unfair to the blind. But you see, God’s will, God’s judgment, God’s wisdom and knowledge is far more than the knowledge and the wisdom of man. We may say that He is unfair because one child sees and the other does not; the other is blind. It makes us to believe that on that point God is unfair. But it is not so. There are things or there are disadvantages of being blind. One may ask me a question. Why is there any advantages to being blind? Yes. Why, do I say that there are advantages of being blind? You will not commit sins being committed by those seeing because you do not have your eyes. Your eyes will not lust anymore because you cannot see. You see there are so many evils in this world that is not happening to a blind person. Let us read first, I John 2:15-16, it says.
DSR: “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
EFS: The worldly thing that we must not love, the things that are in the world are “…the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” What does that mean? If you are blind you are not anymore under this situation wherein your eyes will lust. You are free from this sin. You are free from this iniquity, “the lust of the eyes” So, on this point, you will not say that God is unfair. If you are blind then you are favored. In the spiritual aspect of life, you are favored if you are blind because you are free from this iniquity of man having the lust of the eyes. You see? Now, let us prove this on a particular situation when a blind man was made to see by our Lord Jesus Christ. There was a question there, in the book of John 9:1-3 -
DSR: “And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.”
EFS: You see? That blind man was instrumental that the works of God may be manifest in him. Because our Lord Jesus Christ opened the eyes of that blind. He opened the eyes of that blind, Bro. Daniel.
DSR: Yes, Bro. Eli.
EFS: Had it not been for that blind man, God cannot manifest His power on the eyes of this unbelieving Jews, see? This was a man who was blind from birth. He had a congenital eye defect. But God used this man to show his power through our Lord Jesus Christ, so that people may believe in God, that He maybe manifest in him, “that the works of God should be made manifest in him.” according to the Scriptures. That is it. So, If you are blind, it doesn’t mean that you have sinned or your parents have sinned. It doesn’t necessary follow. Although there are those now being born blind because of the iniquities of their parents. There are those being born with defects because of their parents' acts and their parents' disobedience to God. You see, there are parents now who are trying to abort their pregnancy, taking in pills, but the pregnancy was not aborted, and it follows that when the child was born, the child has defects in his being. It is not God’s doing it is the sin of their parents. But you see this blind man, when the people ask our Lord Jesus Christ – “who did sin, this man, or his parents,” And the answer was very clear - “Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.” Meaning it was ordained by God that this man be born blind and that he live during the time of our Lord Jesus Christ, that people may know that God has the ability and the power to make a blind man see. "that the works of God should be made manifest in him." So, I do not think that if you are born lame it is unfair for you. You see God’s mercy, God’s love, God’s preferences and mercy abounds on those who are less fortunate in life. People who are less fortunate are the favored people in the eyes of God. God has His way of showing mercy to this people. You may be physically fit on birth, you may be physically fit as you grow, but you may not be spiritually lucky. Because there are those people who are blessed with material things with health, wealth, luck, prestige in the eyes of men but who will not be saved. They have not learned God’s way. But these people who are less fortunate in life, these people who are blind, lame, these people who are dumb, they have mental defects, and these people who have physical defects are the very people whom God loves. there is a special place in God’s heart for these people. Come judgment day, I know, that this people will be given consideration and mercy in the judgment seat of God.
